Shaolin monks and disciples to follow a practice unique among the Buddhists who greet each other, using only his right hand. This greeting is a tradition that dates back to Da Mo and his disciple, Hui Ke.

It was winter, after four years was coming to an end, and Shen Guang was in the snow outside the window of Da Mo's room. It was cold, and very angry. The noise woke up the Mo Da in his meditation, and watched Shen Guang. In anger and frustration, Shen Guang asked to know when Da Mo would teach him.
Da Mo replied that he could teach Shen Guang red when the snow fell from the sky.
Hearing this, something inside the heart Shen Guang changed and took the sword on his belt and broke his left hand. He had cut his hand above his head and shook him around. Froze the blood in the hands of cold air and fell like a snow red. Seeing this, the Mo Da Guang Shen agreed to teach.
